About Framsden

Framsden is a small Suffolk village situated 12 miles north of Ipswich on the B1077 and 3 miles south of Debenham, a small market town. The A1120 runs across the north of the parish with several homes running alongside. The majority of homes are situated along Framsden Street with a number of outlying farmhouses and tenant farms of the Helmingham Estate.

With 125 households and a total of 299 residents (2001 figures), Framsden has a balanced demographic profile, with 23% under 16, 56% of working age and 21% over 65. The number of children in the village has increased considerably since 2001.

All essential services, including shops, Post Office, health services, high school and police can be accessed at Debenham, but there is no public transport between the villages. Walking and cycling are dangerous on fast, narrow rural lanes discouraging anything but car transport. Bus services between Framlingham and Ipswich via Framsden have, however, improved significantly.

Framsden is fortunate to 'host' the Helmingham CE primary school and Old Schoolhouse Nursery within the parish. Excellent high schools are available nearby in Debenham and Framlingham but sixth form facilities are available only in Eye, Framlingham or Ipswich.

Much of the parish land area falls within the Helmingham Estate and many properties are tenanted; the traditional estate 2 bedroomed cottages or large farmhouses, which are often temporary rented accommodation.

Housing developments within the village have mainly been large houses and barn conversions. Property prices are around 27% higher than the national average, with very few houses suitable for first time or lower income purchasers.

There have consequently been issues recently around low cost housing/council house allocation and families have been lost to neighbouring areas due to lack of housing, despite working in this village.

Several small businesses operate from Framsden, though the proportion of locally employed residents is low, with many commuting to Ipswich or beyond and an increasing minority working from home utilising broadband communications, available in the village since September 2004.

Framsden enjoys a pub but lost its shop & Post Office in the early 1990's. A small village hall hosts a parent and toddler group, visits from the 'rural coffee caravan' and occasional village events. A communal play area was renovated in 2003.

The historic St Mary's Church has been a successful concert venue in the past and the Baptist Chapel runs a 'Friday Club' for children and young people of the area.
